Get out of bed early in the morning and stay busy throughout the day
Get into a regular exercise routine but not too late in the day

Take a cool shower before bed and try a to have a constant "white noise" while you sleep, I have a fan that stay s running all night, it keeps me cool and offers a quiet and constant sound

Stay away from prescription sleeping pills, (ambien) they have some very odd side effects like sleep walking and eating and even driving. I fell asleep, woke up an hour later, drove 20 miles, did a bunch of coke and don't remember any of it, the phone messages I have left under the influence of ambien haven't been good either, stay away at all costs!

Melatonin, which is a vitamin and can be bought at any drug store works for me, 1-5 mg 20 minutes before bed time and it should help

Make sure you don't spend too much time in bed, don't watch TV, study or anything like that, my doctor says beds are for sleep and sex only, spending too much awake time in bed will get your body in the habit of staying awake while lying down, not a good think

When you can't sleep get up, watch TV, read, do something for 30 minutes and then lay down again.
References :
insomniac for my whole life, 26 year old male, I run a company that I travel a lot for and have constant jet lag, I have stayed up for 4 days straight every few weeks or so since I was 20. From 19 till present I sometimes have to spend a week in my office to get things done (I have to keep people employed and pay 1/2 my money to taxes, thanks BO) therefore have tons of experience with your problem

I have had insomnia for years, the thing that has helped me the MOST is drinking MonaVie. It's a juice with Acia berries and other fruit in it. It is all natural and full of antioxidants. I sleep through the night and wake feeling very rested. I have been drinking this for a year....stopped drinking for a month, to see what would happen, and insomnia returned. I love it, and will never stop drinking it. It's not cheap, but is well worth it! If anyone knows of a cheaper version of MonaVie or Acia berry juice that is just as good, I would love to know.
References :
maybe you need a sleep study, talk to your doctor, it could be a number of things causing this, but at least eliminate the possibilty of a medical condition.
and if thats not the problem, try drink a warm herbal tea in the evening, read a book before bed, listen to soft music.
References :
Yes, stop talking about it & you can learn why I say that by reading a book by Louise Hay "You Can Heal Your Life". Take calcium it is so relaxing. I used to eat a low carb yogurt as a snack about 8 PM & I would sleep so much better. I had a problem & it got me straightened out after several years of not sleeping well.
References :
Nope.. I had insomnia too for a long time, and the only thing that ever really helped was prescription sleeping tablets.
References :
Hi There. Yes, sedatives can cause insomnia. This is because your body naturally tries to return to a state of 'homeostasis' (balance) and thus when the body is sedated the natural response is to become more wakeful. This makes sedatives a problematic solution to sleep problems because they will cause the body to 'wake up' if used long term. I've had insomnia for 15 years and recently started 40 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 times a week. It has changed my life. I sleep more easily, I don't wake up, and I feel great. Plus I've lost weight. There are sites on the internet to explain why exercise helps, it's not that it makes you tired, it's that it changes your body temperature early in the day which helps your internal clock function normally. I still take two RXs for insomnia (elavil and clonazopam) however I've started to reduce the doses and my doctor thinks I may be able to get off them all together. All this for doing something I should be doing anyway!
Best of luck!
